EU Regulatory Update on Smoke Flavourings (2024–2029)

Key Dates & Product Categories


  • Deadline: 1 July 2026 — for “other food categories”. These include items where smoke flavourings are added purely for taste enhancement, such as:

  • Soups

  • Sauces

  • Snacks - crisps, nuts, corn snacks, etc

  • Seasonings, coatings, breadings, etc

  • Similar products.


  • Extended Deadline: 1 July 2029 — for products in categories where smoke flavourings serve as a substitute for traditional smoking methods. These include:

    • Cheese and cheese products

    • Meat

    • Processed fish and fishery products (including crustaceans and molluscs)

    • Fish roe

    These categories receive a longer transition period due to the functional role of smoke flavourings in lieu of traditional processes.
